
Getting the Heat Right for Electronic Glue
If you’ve ever tried to open a smartwatch, you know the struggle. You need enough heat to soften that stubborn adhesive, but if you go too far, you’ve just fried the PCB or killed the OLED screen. It’s a tightrope walk. That’s why we lean on infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of just heating the air, they shoot energy straight into the glue molecules. But here’s the trick: it only works if the lamp and the glue are on the same “page.”
It’s all about the match
Think of every glue as having its own unique fingerprint. If your lamp is putting out a wavelength the glue doesn’t recognize, the energy just bounces off or goes right through. Total waste of time. But when you match the lamp’s output to the glue’s absorption peak? That’s where the magic happens. The molecules start vibrating like crazy, turning that IR energy into heat almost instantly. You get a much faster cure, and more importantly, the heat doesn’t soak into the parts of the watch that you don’t want to melt.
Precision vs. Power
We’ve designed these lamps to pack a lot of heat into a tiny area. It’s great for targeting just the bezel or a specific strip of screen adhesive. But be careful. Because the intensity is so high, you can’t just “set it and forget it.” If you leave it on too long, you’ll see bubbles in the glue or, worse, a warped plastic chassis. I always recommend using a thermocouple to figure out exactly how long to let it dwell. Trust the sensor, not your gut.
Finding the sweet spot
Getting these set up in your workspace is pretty easy. Just make sure your power supply is stable. If the power dips, the lamp flickers, and you’ll end up with uneven curing. As for the light itself, you have a choice. Shortwave IR goes deep, but it can be a bit too aggressive. For most electronic glues, medium-wave is the way to go. You lose a little bit of depth, but you gain a ton of control over the surface. It’s the difference between fighting the glass to get it off and having the glue simply let go without leaving a sticky mess or shocking the display.
