Let’s Talk About 400mm Carbon Fiber Tubing
When you’re building something where every gram counts, but you can’t afford for the thing to wobble, that’s where our 400mm carbon fiber tubes come in. If you’ve dealt with aluminum or steel, you know the struggle—they either get too heavy or they start to bend and warp when things get hot. Carbon fiber just doesn’t do that. It stays stiff. The Nitty-Gritty on Specs We see a lot of people using the 400mm length for support struts or precision shafts. We bake high-modulus fibers into an epoxy resin, which basically means the tube keeps its shape even if your project is vibrating like crazy. It feels incredibly light in your hand, but it doesn’t give way like a cheaper material would. One thing to watch out for: the wall thickness. Going thin saves weight, sure. But if you push it too hard without checking your torque requirements, the tube can buckle. It’s a bummer to have a part fail because it was too light, so do the math before you pick your thickness. A Few Heads-Up on Performance Here’s a quirk about carbon fiber: it conducts electricity. If you’re running wires nearby or working with high-voltage gear, you’ll want to insulate the tube. Otherwise, you’re looking at some annoying grounding issues. It also handles temperature swings like a champ. Just don’t push it past the resin’s “glass transition temperature.” If the resin gets too hot, the tube loses its backbone and goes soft. Putting Them to Work These tubes are great for swapping out heavy metal rods in things like robotic arms, camera booms, or aerospace frames. They can take a lot of repetitive stress without wearing out. They won’t dent like aluminum, but keep in mind they can crack if you hit them with a sharp, hard impact. And a pro tip on the workshop side:don’t use your standard drill bits. Standard HSS bits will dull or burn out the second they touch the carbon weave. You’ll need diamond-grit tooling to get a clean cut. It takes a bit more time and a different set of tools, but the weight you save at the end makes it totally worth the effort.
