
Stop Letting Welding Fumes Kill Your IR Lamps
Here is the reality: welding fumes and metallic dust are absolute killers for infrared lamps. When that grime settles on a quartz tube, it doesn’t just sit there. It creates these tiny, intense hot spots. Eventually, the glass stresses out and cracks. Or, the dust blocks the heat entirely, which tempts you to crank up the power—and that’s the fastest way to fry your filament. The “Air Curtain” Trick We deal with this by building an air curtain right into the heating module. Think of it as an invisible wall. Instead of just putting a piece of plastic or metal in front of the lamp, we blow a steady stream of filtered air across the face of the tube. This creates a pressure barrier that the smoke simply can’t get through. The smoke never touches the glass. Period. The best part? You stop having to shut down your entire line every few shifts just to scrub the lamps clean. Keeping the Heat Steady Now, there is a catch. Because you’re blowing air across the lamp, you’re also cooling it down a bit. To fix that, you need a digital controller that can think fast. We usually go with PID controllers because they’re great at compensating for that heat loss without overshooting the target temperature. It keeps your workpiece exactly where it needs to be. The Trade-offs Nothing is free. Adding an air curtain means the module takes up a bit more room on your floor. You’ll also need a dedicated blower and a solid filtration system. And a word of warning: if your air supply is dirty, you’re basically just sandblasting your own lamps. Make sure your compressed air is dry and filtered down to 5 microns. If you get the wiring and the air right, you can push your lamp life from a few hundred hours to several thousand—even in a shop full of smoke. It turns a constant headache into something you can pretty much forget about.
