
Stop Wasting Your Heat: The Secret is in the Shape
If you’re using a heating lamp for smart lock repairs or precision curing, you probably know the lamp is only half the story. Here’s the problem: most infrared energy just sprays out in every direction. If your reflector isn’t dialed in, you’re basically throwing half your power right into the back of the machine. It’s a waste of electricity and a waste of time. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the gap between the quartz tube and the reflector because that’s where the magic happens.
Getting the Beam Right
A flat reflector is a mistake. It just bounces light back at random angles, leaving you with those annoying “cold spots” where your workpiece just isn’t heating up. Instead, we use curved shapes—think parabolic or elliptical. This pushes all those stray rays into one concentrated beam. By tweaking the focal length, we can put the heat exactly where you need it. The best part? You get a much higher heat density without having to crank up the voltage and pray the lamp doesn’t burn out.
The Balancing Act
Now, you might think “more concentration is always better,” but it’s not that simple. If you tighten the beam too much, you get hot spots. You’ll end up scorching the center of your part while the edges are still freezing. It’s a frustrating way to ruin a component. We aim for that “sweet spot” where the heat feels uniform across the whole area. And a quick tip: watch your air gap. If the tube isn’t sitting exactly where it should, the focal point shifts. Just a few millimeters off, and your efficiency plummets.
The Trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. High-reflectivity coatings get you more heat, but they’re picky. If your workspace is dusty or dirty, those coatings can oxidize and lose their punch. Also, remember that a high-intensity beam puts a lot of stress on the ends of the lamp. Make sure your housing has plenty of breathing room. If it doesn’t vent well, the heat builds up and can actually warp the reflector. Keep it cool, keep it vented, and your gear will last way longer.
