
Getting the Heat Right for Smart Meter PCBs
If you’ve ever worked with smart meter PCBs, you know the struggle. You need the solder joints to bond perfectly, but if you push too much heat, you’ll fry the sensitive electronics. It’s a tightrope walk. That’s why we built our infrared (IR) heating lamps to hit that sweet spot—concentrated heat exactly where the board needs it. The Nitty-Gritty on Power We stick with short-wave IR emitters. Why? Because they don’t waste time heating up the air in your factory; they dump the energy straight into the PCB substrate. When you’re picking a lamp, keep an eye on the wattage-to-length ratio. That’s what controls your ramp-up speed. Higher wattage means you get through those pre-heating cycles faster, which clears your bottleneck and gets boards moving. Just keep a close eye on your conveyor speed. If the boards crawl, the edges can overheat. It’s all about that balance. Quartz and the Small Stuff We use high-purity quartz glass for the tungsten filaments. Standard glass just can’t take the hit when you’re cycling heat up and down rapidly—it would crack. And here’s a pro tip: if you’re working with green or blue solder masks, those can be tricky to heat. Some of our lamps have special coatings to shift the emission spectrum so the board actually absorbs the heat instead of reflecting it. As for the fit, we use the usual industry connectors. Whether you’re running R7s or some specialized pins, these just slide right in. No gaps, no voltage drops, no headaches. Real-World Setup Now, if you’re plugging these into a mid-sized shop, you’ve got to make sure your power is steady. If your voltage jumps around, your filaments are going to burn out way faster than they should. Most folks run a 230V or 110V setup. But if you’re pushing for maximum heat, make sure your cooling fans are actually doing their job. If the housing gets too hot, the supports can warp, and then you’ve got a real mess on your hands. At the end of the day, we want the smaller shops to have the same consistency as the giant factories.
